SPECTRUM is now a Third Party Hate Crime Reporting Centre
What is Hate Crime?
Hate Crime is any criminal offence which is perceived by the victim or any other person as being motivated by prejudice or hate, based on a person’s race, religious belief, sexual orientation, Disability or transgender, or a person’s perceived race, religious belief, sexual orientation, Disability or transgender.
Hate Crime Can Be…
Physical violence and assault, verbal abuse, obscene phone calls or texts, offensive mail, email or graffiti. It can be damage to property, arson, dumping of rubbish, or offensive or dangerous substances posted through letterboxes.
Third Party Reporting
There are many reasons that prevent people from reporting hate crimes and incidents. The victims’ state of mind, perceptions, and expectations may contribute to the decision not to report.
One other important factor which has prevented many to report has been accessibility of police stations and the process involved. The Stephen Lawrence Inquiry Report highlighted a need for independent reporting sites providing the victims with the ability to report at locations other than police stations 24 hours a day, providing support for the victim through a partnership of relevant specialist agencies, and can be done without revealing the victim’s personal details. Only with the victim’s consent will police investigate the crime. This is known as Third Party Reporting.
The benefits of Third Party Reporting are:
- Victims will gain confidence and be encouraged to report crime
- Victims will not need to give their personal details if they so wish
- Support organisations to best help the victims can be identified
