Our Social Work Student Unit provides 70 and 100 day placements and takes up to 8 students on placement at any one time. Students have access to an on-site Practice Educator and two Workplace Supervisors, including a Qualified Social Worker. Most of our students come from Universities in the South East region – including Southampton Solent University and Portsmouth University – but we can take students from any location if they are able to travel.

What we offer

Two students at a coproduction group meeeting

A placement in our Student Unit enables students to gain invaluable practical work experience. It provides them with a realistic view of the barriers that many Service Users face on a daily basis, and hands on experience of helping to address them.

Students on placement undertake advocacy work with clients referred to our Advocacy and Advice service as well as empowerment and mentoring roles. Students are also given responsibility for the delivery and management of a specific project to match their learning needs and interests.

What people say about our Student Unit

Thought I’d drop you a message and let you know that I have been offered a job as a Supervising Social Worker on my current placement. I will be working at an Independent Fostering Agency. I would just like to thank you again for the excellent experience you provided me at SPECTRUM. I honestly learned so many transferable skills, which have paid dividends in my current placement. (Student)

Social work students on placement with SPECTRUM have real opportunities to work alongside service users to achieve change – the student unit offers a unique and supported learning environment with a strong focus on social work values. (University Senior Lecturer)
